I turned down the job offer today. Weighed a number of factors and decided that unless they gave me considerably more money I wouldn't make the move. If I was single where it didn't matter if I worked 3-11 or 9-5 then I probably would've taken it.
I asked Cherie to put a salary where she wouldn't be horribly upset that I'm working M-F from 3-11, one hour away. After about a hour thinking about it, she basically said no reasonable amount of money would be satisfactory.
So based on her feelings and my original thoughts, I turned it down.

So much for a raise lol

Job offer [Mar. 15th, 2006|09:40 pm]
As I expected, the Fitchburg Sentinel & Enterprise offered me a job today as a reporter/paginator. The initial offer comes with a pay raise of just over $3,000 a year - before taxes. While I certainly would love to have an extra $3,000 a year, I don't like the idea of driving 55 minutes to and from work (course I could move closer to Fitchburg) or the 3-11 p.m. schedule I'd be working 5 days a week, including at least one Friday or Saturday each week.

I told them I'd get back to them tomorrow after discussing it with Cherie. We didn't talk about it much because I already knew I didn't plan to take the job if offered unless the money involved was too good to turn down. $3,000 extra a year just isn't enough to make me do this change. I'd essentially see Cherie twice a week (she'd be in bed by the time I got home from work, and she'd be at work when I woke up in the morning) and the pay increase would pretty much be spent on gas mileage on the way to and from work.

Job interview next week [Mar. 11th, 2006|12:43 am]
There is a possible scenario where I would be making a return to the 'Burg.

During a disgruntled moment at work this week, I logged onto www.journalismjobs.com and came across a job with the Fitchburg Sentinel & Enterprise. The job is in the sports department, which would be a change from covering the towns of Southbridge and Holland. Instead of going to Town Council/Board of Selectmen/School Committee meetings and covering daily happenings and crime and fire and such, I'd be covering local sporting events - high school, college.

I sent my resume, some clippings and some design work/layouts of the newspaper that I've done here and there in Southbridge. I sent it all out on Tuesday and then tonight I had a phone call from the sports editor of the S&E looking to set up an interview.

Fitchburg is about 50 minutes from Southbridge, prolly a lil longer from Holland. My main fear is that it'd be a daily schedule of something like 3-11 p.m. I work a few nights a week as is, covering meetings and such, and am not really interested in doing that on a daily basis. I know Cherie would not be pleased with me leaving for work towards the end of her workday and returning home when she's in bed/asleep. Also, I'd need a substantial enough increase in my wages because of the essential hour commute to and from. We are going to begin looking fo a home soon so perhaps we could compromise and move a little closer to Fitchburg, but not so far that she has to travel a lot to get to work.

This is obviously horribly preliminary because I haven't even had the interview just yet.

(no subject) [Mar. 5th, 2006|11:12 pm]
This started out as a reply to Michelle's latest post, mostly just letting her know I;m alive. However, I figure I'll let everyone else know as well.

Just dropping a quick line, saying hey.

It's been awhile since I've even been to LJ at all. Very hectic time of year between now and June for me at work. Budget seasonf or the town and school departments and the elections are upon us as well. On top of that, I've got that whole wedding thing we're working on, back on the Little League Board of Directors & coaching, and on Feb. 25 I co-chaired a 3-on-3 charity basketball tournament for a little girl with cancer.

Wedding plans are going very well. We did the registry stuff today at Linens & Things and at Target. I enjoyed playing with that ridiculous scanner gun thing. The only things left to do, for the most part, is for Cherie to figure out the flowers, me to figure out tuxedos, make final hotel reservations for the honeymoon, order and send out the invitations, finalize our song list for the DJ (1st dance, father-daughter dance, etc). We also to really start looking at post-wedding living situation. Home or apartment? Southbridge, Holland or somewhere else?

Just to prove I'm still alive... [Feb. 13th, 2006|01:13 am]
I've been very busy lately between work, the charity basketball tourney (www.aislenstournament.org), the wedding planning, little league stuff, and life in general.

So, to show I haven't died or fallen completely off the face of the earth, here's a meaningless post.

Another wedding update [Jan. 20th, 2006|12:48 am]
[music |Dirty Water - The Standells]

So we've booked Francesco's Italian Bakery to do our wedding cake. We've got a nice design that's different than the traditional cake. I like it.

We also have the contracts for the DJ, we just need to actually sign them and give the deposit and we're all set there as well.

Everything is developing quite nicely.

Only big things left are to do flowers, actually order the invitations we picked out, and go looking for tuxes. Just bout everything else is either done or are things we're not worrying about just yet (i.e. rehearsal dinner, gifts for the wedding party)

But while we're on it, does anyone have any ideas for rehearsal dinner? In other words, Michelle - what do you have to suggest since you're the only one who really knows me or comments in my posts lol

Woo...ain't I post-crazy tonight [Jan. 4th, 2006|12:56 am]
Some of the biggest parts of a wedding are the songs played at the reception. Things like the 1st dance, the wedding party dance, the father-daughter dance, mother-son dance, last dance, cake cutting, etc.

So what are some suggestions?

Here are some of my own personal thoughts thus far.

First Dance:
* I'm afraid we'll end up with Lonestar's "Amazed" (http://www.rlyrics.com/L/Lonestar/Amazed.asp) as the song; it's a nice song and all but it's so wedding cliche - everyone uses this song (same goes for crap like Savage Garden's Truly Madly Deeply_
* I like the Beatles' "I Will" (http://www.mp3lyrics.org/b/beatles/i-will/) but I fear I'm alone in this lol
* She's a country fan and quite frankly country lends itself to these sort of songs because of the way their ballads/love songs are done, so Tim McGraw/Faith Hill's "It's Your Love" could work as well (http://www.hit-country-music-lyrics.com/Tim-McGraw-Faith-Hill-Its-Your-Love.html)

Wedding Party: * I dunno

Father-Daughter:
* Not my call as it's between the two of them, however, I did suggest Gary Allen's "Tough Little Boys" (http://www.lyrics007.com/Gary%20Allan%20Lyrics/Tough%20Little%20Boys%20Lyrics.html)

Mother-Son:
* No idea - quite honestly, I've never been that close to my mother so...

Last Dance:
* As far as I'm concerned it can be the runner up to the first dance selection

Cake Cutting:
* The Beatles' "When I'm 64" (http://www.seeklyrics.com/lyrics/Beatles/When-I-m-64.html) is my choice
Garter Belt:
* Dave Rose's "The Stripper" -- no words, if you heard it you'd know what it is

What categories am I forgetting?

What songs would you suggest? or which would you not suggest while we're at it.

Ding dong, ding dong [Jan. 4th, 2006|12:33 am]
I'm doing my obligatory bi-annual post because I haven't posted in awhile. I don't have much to say )although I did get a $1 raise today...woo!) other than to update on the wedding plans. That's all people ask me about for the most part - the holiday season was cherie and i being asked by at least a dozen family members for the latest on the wedding plans.

So here goes.

* Ceremony and reception site - booked.
* Honeymoon plans are figured out on paper, need to start booking things.
* Guest list is done but is still fluid and will technically be fluid until the day the invites are sent out.
* Wedding dress and bridesmaid dresses have been ordered and paid (dunno if paid in full, not my area lol).
* Photography & videography - two pro's are "booked" (one may not be in the business by then and the other is doing it but we haven't discussed the $ part of it at all) and I have two college friends tabbed as backups (one was a photography major and works for a portrait studio while the other was one of Fitchburg's 598375 film majors and has expensive camera; i don't think the video will be watched more than once or twice anyways)
* DJ search has not been going well - the ideal DJ in our point of view has not called me back after I left a voicemail awhile ago with all of the info they could possibly need; so if you know a good and fairly cheap DJ lemme know
* Centerpieces have been purchased and Cherie and my mother are doing the alterations/modifications they want to do
* We had planned on using the pastor of her church (she doesn't actually attend aside from things like a Christmas service) however he's certifiably crazy and is putting on a contest called Mr. Heterosexual (www.mrhetero.com) so between that and my overall atheistic sort of point of view we're going to go with a JP; most likely the town clerk in my hometown who is actually a pretty good friend of my older brothers and sisters (grew up and went to school together)
* Started looking into registering for gifts - by started looking into I mean we've called, e-mail or visited several places and asked for catalogs and such to kinda get an idea of what they have in an effort to cut a little time down when we actually go to register.
* Things we still need to do: Book a baker for the cake; decide on party favors; order invitations; go do the tuxedo thing; get wedding bands; work on arrangements for rehearsal dinner; necessary paperwork and licenses; figure out if we'll have anyone do any readings or whatever during ceremony and if we'll do original vows or whatever; decide on whether or not to have a wedding reception line or just mingle during reception; collect some hotel info for relatives coming from outside of the area

I think that's just about it. Those who have been married (or even if you haven't), feel free to note if you think I missed something in there.

It's a Sept. 9, 2006 wedding in Webster, Mass. and I believe the only LJer invited is Michelle and her hubby Ricky.

It feels like just yesterday when I was at their wedding but it's been so long already. It's amazing how quickly time goes by.

Murder at Big Bird's House [Dec. 14th, 2005|12:17 am]
So I thought I was going to have a pretty light and easy day at work today. Boy was I wrong.

I get a tip from a source a little after 1 p.m. that I should take a drive up Alpine Drive in Southbridge and that I'd come across a crime scene.
I do as I'm told and sure enough, there's a crime scene with Massachusetts and Connecticut State Police on hand. A television news crew from Connecticut is there but they tell me they have no idea whats going on - I figure they're lying and not giving me any info because I work for a differrent news outlet. I look around and my first instict is that there must have been a murder somewhere down this long and winding driveway that ends with an iron gate and a large house beyond it.

I make a few phone calls and find out someone supposedly died of a hit and run accident. As horrible as this sounds, I say "oh okay" and figure I'll return back to work and wait for the cops to do their thing because it was only a hit and run death, nothing huge.

Then I find out there's a press conference in Woodstock, Conn. about this death at 3:15. With it now about 2:30, I figure they wouldn't hold a press conference over your standard hit and run death so I find my way to the press conference site.

A Conn. State Police official confirms it wasn't a hit and run but was indeed a murder. I get giddy in a way - again, as horrible as that sounds. The problem is as a reporter my job is basically to just report what happens and not actually contribute anything to society other than the most accurate record I can create as to what has happened and why. In my business, things like murders and fires and just human tragedy in general is the good stuff. This is our homerun or touchdown, this is our friday after thanksgiving sale for retailers, this is our release of new $20 bills for bank tellers - its a big deal for us and it gets the adrenaline going. Its somewhat upsetting at time to think of myself and my peers as leeches of sorts but quite frankly its what people want to know about. I hear so often, "Why don't newspapers write about the good stuff going on?" Well quite frankly, people don't care that your son's class is doing a fundraiser for homeless people or that $5,000 was donated to the school library -- they wanna know who lies and cheats. The old Hollywood saying is true in everyday life -- Sex and violence sells.

Now armed with the knowledge that there was indeed a murder on the Southbridge, MA/Woodstock, CT border -- literally on the border, the home where the body was found is half in Mass and half in Conn -- I make some phone calls and find out that not only is this a murder but the property it was found on is that of Caroll Spinney ... better known as Oscar the Grouch and Big Bird.
Yes, the home of the man that has played Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch, among others, on Sesame Street for 30-something years was the site of a gruesome murder.

This turns my homerun into a grand slam.

Imagine it now, Big Bird arrested for murder! Muppet Murder!

O.J. Simpson is one thing but Big Bird!?!?

90-120 minutes later I'm somewhat relieved but mostly disappointed when I find out Big Bird is not a suspect in this matter, he may not have even been in the area.

Earlier tonight police arrested a Plainfield, Conn man for the kidnapping of the 44-year-old North Woodstock, Conn woman that was murdered.
Why she was found at Big Bird's place is still unknown.

It was quite an interesting day.

DJ Your Own Wedding? [Oct. 22nd, 2005|02:34 pm]
I'm toying with the idea --- and leaning towards doing so --- of not hiring a DJ for the wedding and essentially DJing our wedding.

Create several CDs full of music -- dinner music, the special stuff for like cake cutting and garter belt and all that, slow dances and the party music.

My only real concerns are ensuring I have decent equipment (speakers, etc.) for it to sound good and I would, in theory, need someone to do the announcement type stuff - introduce the wedding party, call for the cake cutting and garter and bouquet and that sorta stuff.

For the most part, I think, I could make the equivalent of a mix tape and run that for the bulk of the reception.

PROS
*Save prolly $500-700 by not hiring anyone, which is a few hundred more for the honeymoon and life in general
*Guaranteed that music played is stuff Cherie and I like or want to have played
*Guaranteed that songs we don't want to hear isn't played
*No cheesy DJ

CONS
*Who would do the announcing and such?
*Tradition says you hire someone (is this really a con of not doing it myself though?)
*Need to make sure I have decent equipment
*Another thing for me to worry about on a busy day

So I'm leaning towards doing it myself sorta thing, but what are your thoughts out there in LJ land? Okay, so it'll be Michelle, maybe Nikki and maybe Carolyn that actually leave a response but...

Does anyone know anyone who has DJd their own wedding before? Does anyone know a DJ who could give me what they feel would be the pros or cons of this?

Post away!

Changes in some wedding plans [Sep. 29th, 2005|12:10 am]
Our top choice for a reception site was Wright's Chicken Farm in Rhode Island. While this may sound odd to those who have never heard of Wright's - it is not. This place is booked solid for most holidays and is known through much of southern New England as a great place. The problem, however, is that to book a wedding reception there you need to have a minimum of 225 guests. That's a little more than twice what we want for guests.

So the front runner is currently a place called "Indian Ranch" in Webster.
It wasn't a place I was thinking of but I've heard they have a great reception/banquet hall. After looking into it further (one of a few places that have called back after leaving messages for them the last few days) it's not a bad deal. We can have our wedding ceremony there too if we so choose. Neither Cherie or I are exactly devoutly religious so it's not an issue for us if we do the vows in a church with Christ on the cross hanging above us, or on in a gazebo/arch thingy in front of a scenic view over Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg. I kid you not, that is the true name of Webster Lake.
The food prices isn't the lowest we've seen thus far, but it's most definitely not the most expensive. It's certainly doable - and it's, for the most part, real food not the $86 plate of chicken with 478 sauces and vegetables and crap poured ontop of it. Gimme roasted chicken and some dinner rolls, I'm happy.
I'll be talking to their wedding person tomorrow morning and finalizing a visit to the site to check it out and help solidify our decision.

Assuming we do book Indian Ranch, a wedding at St. Mary's is out of the picture as the time available for the room would conflict with Mass at the church. St. Mary's has a 4 p.m. Mass on Saturdays so we'd have a couple hours of down time between wedding and reception - not good. So we can either wait for Holland Congregational Church to get back to us (was told Monday a pastor would call me ASAP) about their church or hire a priest/pastor/justice of peace/etc. to perform the ceremony at Indian Ranch.

That's it for now I guess. I'm still sick so my mind is kinda blah, especially since this wedding stuff has it scattered around.

Engagement update [Sep. 25th, 2005|01:13 am]
This LJ will probably be just about the whole wedding planning stuff from here on in since I never post anyways, aside from the occassional meme thingy.

- So all parents and several others (friends, family) know of the engagement.
- We opened up a joint account for the purpose of wedding expenses, we'll be putting at least 15-20% of each paycheck into it, basically as much as possible without making the necessary bills bounce; this means fewer dinners out.
- We've come up with three agreeable dates for the wedding, two of which are next September. The top date is Sept. 9 (I like this as 9 is my favorite number and it'd be 9.9.06)
- Wedding will be, ideally, at one of two Catholic churches: St. Mary's or Notre Dame. St. Mary's is the top choice as its the church my family had attended when practicing the religion and its a beautiful church. Notre Dame is a french church (her famiy is french) and is even more beautiful. If we can't get married in a Catholic Church (I'm an atheist lol, and shes not technically catholic) then we'll go to plan B...best looking church we can find!
- Reception sites are still up in the air but it's likely either a hall (Knights of Columbus, Elks Lodge, etc) or Wright's Chicken Farm in Rhode Island. I love me some Wright's!
- We did our preliminary draft of guests and its just a tad over my personal opinion of a 100-person limit. Our must invites is actually 81 or so and with the "we'd like to invite" list, it's somewhere around 110-120. I'm pleased by this.
- We've also figured out who we'll be asking to be in the wedding party, but that'll remain secret til we ask and get answers. Granted, nobody here really knows me (aside from a very few FSCers) or is in that running (sorry mich lol) but just figure thats the thing to do. Besides, you don't know these people so what do you care?
- So Monday I'll call/see Father Peter at St. Mary's and see what needs to be done for us to get hitched there and we'll see where it takes us. I'll also, this week prolly, call some halls and see about availibility.

Quiz for anyone who would like to help me in a little research project I'm doing. Feel free to post anonymously if you'd like -- certainly understandable based on the information being requested.

1) Monthly income (single or joint if you split living costs with significant other)
2) Monthly rent (if utilities are included, please indicate so)
3) Monthly utilities (n/a if included in rent; ballpark guess of yearly average would be good as it varies by season)
4) Monthly cable or satellite bill
5) Monthly telephone bill (note if it includes more than just a phone line; i.e. land line and a cell, etc.)
6) Monthly groceries/food bill (including eating out; also note how many people being fed by this)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Tell your friends about this and have them post answers -- anonymous or not!
